Finca Cortesin – November 2018

Mark finally gets a win with 33 points at Finca Cortesin !

Finca Cortesin is a Real Treat in the Sunshine

Every year we, at Golf in the Sun, look to give our members a “special treat” golf day at one of the top courses on the coast.  Over the years we have played them all, including Valderrama, Sotogrande, Las Brisas and Aloha.  Finca Cortesin was this years “treat”, and what a treat it was yesterday.  Finca Cortesin opened its doors to the golfing world in early 2007 as a very open, often windswept course, with aspirations of joining the elite band of courses on the Costa Del Sol funded by the property boom of the early 2000’s.  The project, along with other similar golfing designs suffered badly with the the financial disaster year of 2008 taking its toll, but with a combination of patience and deep pockets, the Finca Cortesin brand is flying high again and it was a delight to play the course that it is today, an established, mature gem in Casares.

Nice one Tony – Bags like that don’t come very often !

Many changes have taken place over the years with the latest being the micro Bermuda grass greens that were so tricky for all yesterday.  Time after time when asking my obvious question of “how are you doing” when driving around, came the answer “the greens are just killing me !”.

Not so though for yesterday’s winner, Mark Squire, with a winning round of 33 points.  Congratulations go to Mark on his win which was a great effort, but Marks instuction for us to auction his winning prize of a voucher for two green fees and a buggy at Finca Cortesin for the Triple A animal sanctury in Marbella (where he and his wife Irina have just adopted a new dog) was a super gesture which raised €340.00 (bought by Hans Kraak, thanks Hans) much needed funds for the charity.

Coming in a close second and third respectively were Tony Sharp just a point behind Mark, and Finca Cortesin member, Chris Reynolds who’s score could have been so much better after he birdied the first two holes of his round, so well done to both on super efforts.

The men’s nearest the pin was reserved for Rob Vismans, who walked away with some nice wines from The Bodegon Gallery, in Benahavis, while in the ladies section there

You really should not take the game so seriously Mitch !!

was a paucity (actually none) of shots hitting the green, so on this occasions we gave the prize to Ana Geisterfer as she had the least number of “blobs” of all the ladies playing.

We always rely on many people to make these golf days work, so special thanks go to all of our valued sponsors who invariably make sure our prize table is full of super delights for our winners on all of our golf days.  So thanks are in order for:-

Blevins Franks, Estepona

Ibex Insurance, Benavista

Amigos Restaurant, Benhavis

Bodegon Wine Gallery, Benhavis

Fairplay Resort and Spa, Benalup

Cambridge Beaches Resort and Spa, Bermuda

A fine looking gang !

It was also a delight to have Darren Windhagauer, the principal of latest sponsor, Inspired Homes Marbella, back in the fold after an absence of 8 years since his (yet to be repeated), back to back wins 9 years ago ! Welcome back mate !

Thanks are also in order for Miguel, James and all of the team at Finca Cortesin for inviting us to play their wonderful course on such a beautiful sunny day and looking after us royaly as they always do.

So what next ?

Our final golf day of the year will be at El Paraiso on the 2nd December where we will be announcing the winners of both the “Race to Cambridge Beaches, Bermuda” and the “118 Race to Faiplay” leagues.  We then look forward with much anticipation to get it all going again in our tenth celebratory year of 2019.  Already arranged is our 2019 “treat”, with a day out at the wonderful Royal Sotogrande on the the 15th November, but equally exciting will be our opening day outing with a trip to the very special Marbella Resort Course on Saturday 2nd February.

So much to look forward to….

And of course, as always, if you want to be on the winners podium at any of these golfing gems you will have to………….”Keep ’em down the middle”.

Best regards,

B and M.
