A VERY SPECIAL GOLFING TRIP TO SOUTH AFRICA

Having organised tours to South Africa in 2019 and 2020 we were looking forward to repeating a winning formula in 2021 also.  However, the best laid plans for many of us went out of the window as Covid took its toll for the next two years.  As the dust cleared after the dreaded virus, many asked us whether we would organise another golfing trip to the ‘Rainbow Nation’?

For a number of reasons we have been reluctant to set this up again, but hey, we aren’t getting any younger, the wonders of South Africa are still there waiting for us, so we decided to do it again.

However, to get the best hotels and golf courses, we were too late to organise this for next year, so 2025 is now our plan.   We have selected three destinations that our groups enjoyed most from the previous Golf in the Sun Trips and have combined them into one fantastic itinerary for 2025.  This special golfing trip that has something for everyone, which obviously includes the avid golfer, but also accommodates the avid golfer’s non playing partner, and we believe we have found it with a trip here that will suit all!

Why South Africa ?

Quite simply, it has everything. Super golf, fantastic scenery, stunning and unique wildlife and safari parks, lush winelands and wonderful beaches, the famous Garden Route and the capital, Cape Town, beneath flat topped Table Mountain. All of this with just a 1 hour time difference from Western Europe (so no dreaded jet lag !).  Add in the current beneficial exchange of the Rand against either the Euro or Pound, and you have a superb winning formula.  This trip is tailored to include all of this plus much more……

This will be a 12 night 13 day adventure, taking in wonderful Cape Town, a unique safari experience at the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, the golfing mecca of Fancourt, finishing off with a stay at the beautiful seaside town of Hermanus on the Western Cape Province.  If this isn’t enough, a very special bonus add-on is available….

Day 1 – Saturday 15th March

Arrive at Cape Town International Airport.

Upon arrival, you’ll clear passport control and collect your luggage before meeting up with your driver in the arrivals hall.

You will be transferred in comfort to The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel located in Constantia.

Day 2 – Sunday 16th March – Pearl Valley

Non golfers – Guided tour of Franshhoek and La Motte Wine Farm

Non golfers will visit the quaint town of Franschhoek and the highly acclaimed La Motte Wine Farm with your guide.

The Valley of Franschhoek began its history as a wine region in 1694 when French Huguenots were given the land in the area then known as Oliphantshoek, so-called because of the Elephants that favoured the isolated corner.

We’ll collect the golfers at Pearl Valley enroute back to the hotel.

In the evening you can either join us at one of the world’s most celebrated restaurants, La Colombe (No 11 in Trip Advisor’s – Best Fine Dining Restaurants in the World in 2022), which is very close to the hotel, take the complimentary hotel shuttle to the V & A Waterfront for your evening meal, or do neither and just enjoy the hotel’s unique dining again, it’s up to you.

Day 3 – Monday 17th March – Cape Town

Table Mountain and V and A Waterfront

After breakfast you’ll explore Table Mountain and the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront where you will be collected and returned to the hotel by private transfer.

Cape Town is a memory seekers delight with shopping and entertainment centers to satisfy the most arduous and demanding of shoppers; the picturesque V & A Waterfront with a variety of fine shops and restaurants is situated on Cape Town’s working harbour.

A visit to Cape Town isn’t complete of course unless you’ve ventured up the iconic Table Mountain.

Since the first person laid eyes on Table Mountain, it has exerted its powerful and charismatic pull, enchanting and drawing any and all who fall under its spell. After opening in 1929, the Table Mountain Cableway has taken over 16 million people to the top of the mountain.

After your descent from the mountain, you will be taken to the V and A Waterfront.  The rest of the day is yours to take advantage of all on offer.

One of Cape Town’s biggest tourist attractions, the Waterfront, evokes images of the early activities of the harbour. Much of its charm lies in the fact that this busy commercial harbour is set in the midst of a huge entertainment venue with restaurants, specialty shops, craft markets, theatres and museums.

You can visit the Two Oceans Aquarium where you will enjoy a fascinating underwater world. The Maritime Museum focuses on the history of shipping from prehistoric times to the present day.

Or, take a boat trip to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela spent his time in jail for 18 years.

Alternatively, take a helicopter ride and soar above the city’s skyline, wine valleys, wonderful Atlantic Coast and Table Mountain.

Why not visit the Cape Town Diamond Museum.  Located near the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island, the Cape Town Diamond Museum is for anyone interested in the history of Africa’s diamonds.

If you are looking to spend some money then simply shop till you drop in shoppers paradise. As the locals like to say when discussing where to shop, ‘the Waterfront probably has it’.  It’s a relaxed area that offers the best in local art, ceramics, jewellery, clothing and more, all with a strong sense of local flair.

If none of the above suits you, then just eat, eat, eat! From quick bites and pubs with a view, to some of the city’s best fine dining, the Waterfront genuinely has something for every palate. There are over 100 restaurants and food stalls to choose from.

Day 4 – Tuesday 18th March – Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Dwyker Tented Lodge/Tilney Manor

Check out after breakfast and meet your guide and driver at reception for your transfer (3 hours) via the famous Route 62 to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, located near the Little Karoo Town of Montagu.

Nestled in the rolling koppies of the Little Karoo, at the foot of the Warmwaterberg, a sprawling expanse of undulating rock formations, hardy scrub vegetation and blue African skies, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve invites one to experience the peace and tranquillity of Africa. Sanbona stretches across 58,000ha of wide-open plains, with mountain tops to gorges and a wide array of endemic flowers and foliage.

Dwyka Tented Lodge is surrounded by awe-inspiring rock formations in a horseshoe bend of a dry Karoo ravine. The secluded luxury tents exude an atmosphere of pioneering adventure.

The lodge stands proud within the beautifully weathered landscape reflecting the nomadic lifestyle of the Khoisan hunter-gatherers who once roamed this land. Day 5 – Wednesday 19th March – Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

Embark on a sunrise game drive in the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, home of the extremely scarce white lion. After your sunrise safari you’ll return to the lodge for a delicious breakfast.

Sanbona’s qualified game rangers lead all safaris in 4×4 open game viewing vehicles with refreshments on board. Expect to see lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras and much more on safari.

Discover the spirit of the Little Karoo on foot and see the many treasures on the reserve.  It may be a gentle walk, or try a challenging trail to a secluded rock pool that invites you to submerge into its invigorating bliss before returning to the lodge for lunch.

You can also view ancient rock art at Sanbona. There are seven recorded sites throughout the reserve. These rock art sites date back more than 3,500 years and depict the spiritual beliefs and lives of the San and the Khoi-Khoi people.

After lunch and some R&R you’ll meet up with the game rangers and go on your sunset game drive. Afterwards you’ll return to the lodge for dinner and an evening at leisure beside the campfire under South Africa’s magical starlit night sky.

Day 6 – Thursday 20th March – Fancourt

Travel to Fancourt

Check out after your sunrise safari and breakfast. Meet your guide and driver at the Welcome Lounge and continue your journey (3 hours) along Route 62.

Along the way you’ll be stopping over at some beautiful Little Karoo towns for sightseeing and refreshments. The journey concludes after the spectacular descent down the Outeniqua Pass to the town of George.

Check in at Fancourt Resort, home of the 2003 Presidents Cup.

Enjoy breakfast before teeing off at Fancourt Outeniqua.

The course offers spectacular views of its namesake, the Outeniqua Mountains, from every hole. Designed by legendary Grand Slam golfer, Gary Player, it is similar in character to its sibling, the Montagu, and its challenging design and fine conditioning will ensure an excellent test for golfers of all levels. Outeniqua offers four tees varying approximately 1.5km’s worth of pristine kikuyu fairway. The streams and water hazards that come into play on eleven of the holes add exciting shore challenges to the elegant course.

Tee off at Fancourt Montagu after a mouth watering breakfast at La Cantina Restaurant.

The Fancourt Montagu Course, which took shape under master golfer Gary Player, is a delightful parklands course with a magnificent atmosphere. World class conditioning and a setting that takes in mountains, water and wildlife are some of the highlights of a round at Fancourt Montagu. Over the 6324 metres, the course remains highly acclaimed and has, in recent years, been voted South Africa’s No 1 golf course.

Exceptional conditioning and a setting that takes in mountains, water and wildlife are some of the highlights of a round at Fancourt Montagu. The course offers unparalleled natural beauty and is surrounded by vast manicured gardens.

Check out after breakfast and meet your guide and driver at reception for your transfer (4 hours) along the N2 coastal highway to the seaside holiday town of Hermanus.

Along the way you’ll be stopping over at some interesting tourist attractions for sightseeing and refreshments.

Check in at the beautifully appointed Marine Hotel.

The Marine is one of South Africa’s most spectacular seaside hotels. Located on Hermanus’ famous cliff path, overlooking the breathtaking Walker Bay in the Western Cape’s Overberg region, this Small Luxury Hotels of the World property is the latest addition to the Liz McGrath Collection of luxury boutique hotels.

Breakfast is served each morning inside the Pavilion’s main dining section; guests can sit inside or take their pick from two al fresco options, either in the courtyard by the pool, or on the outside pavilion overlooking Walker Bay. Day 11 – Tuesday 25th March – Hermanus

Day at leisure or play Hermanus Golf

After the three day’s concentrated golf at Fancourt here is the opportunity to recharge the batteries – Stroll down the famous Hermanus Cliff Path, visit the local market or just top up your tan beside the pool and enjoy sundowners overlooking the ocean while you’re not out and about sightseeing or playing golf.

Alternatively, for those dedicated golfers, nearby Hermanus Golf offers the opportunity of another round in the sunshine.

As a second alternative (as our coach will be with us anyway) you can go on a fun filled day of sightseeing at Hermanus and its surrounds, including wine tasting at the award-winning Hermanuspietersfontein and Bouchard Finlayson Wine Farms.

Stretched along a narrow ribbon of land between towering mountains and a spectacular shoreline, Hermanus is surrounded by nature in her grandest style.

Sitting on the edge of Walker Bay, this small coastal town offers an array of experiences. Whales and Great White Sharks, the most diverse floral kingdom in the world, mountain walks and unspoilt beaches, secluded forests, crashing surf, lagoons and a hidden wine valley so beautiful it’s named Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth). Public art and sculptures at Gearings Point complement the artistic offerings of the many galleries that form an art walk.

Hemel-en-Aarde is widely regarded as one of the most exciting wine areas in South Africa and one of the most beautiful too. It is the place for fine, restrained, classically styled South African Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Falling within the Walker Bay district, it is comprised of three contiguous Wine Wards located behind the seaside resort town of Hermanus.

Hemel-en-Aarde is home to more than 20 wine producers (and growing) and there are several factors that, in combination, set it apart from other South African wine producing areas.

Day 12 – Wednesday 26th March – Arabella Golf

Non Golfers visit Kleinmond

Set in the majestic Kogelberg Mountain Range and bordered by the Botrivier Lagoon is the Arabella Golf Course.

With its tricky bunkers, immaculate Kikuyu fairways and inventive water hazards it is of little wonder that the course has consistently been ranked in SA’s top ten courses.

The 6381 metre course’s design is the masterpiece of acclaimed South African golf course architect Peter Matkovich, who was commissioned in 1999 and he has most certainly not disappointed.

Non golfers will visit Kleinmond and other quaint coastal villages after dropping off the golfers at the club.

Kleinmond is a peaceful little village endowed with some of the coast’s most natural beauty. It lies within the UNESCO declared Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, which supports over 1600 species of fynbos, of which 150 are endemic.

We’ll collect the golfers at Arabella enroute back to the hotel.

You’ll be transferred in comfort to Cape Town Airport, where you’ll either take your flight back home, or board the local flight to Kruger Mpumalanga Airport, Nelspruit, to extend your vacation.

If you decided to extend your vacation, you’ll collect your luggage on arrival and meet your driver in the arrivals hall. You’ll be transferred in comfort to Buhala Private Game Lodge.

Perfectly positioned on the southern bank of the Crocodile River, the luxurious Buhala Lodge overlooks the Kruger National Park and offers a new perspective on classic colonial comfort.

Day 14 – Friday 28th March – Leopard Creek

After breakfast you’ll be transferred to Leopard Creek Golf Course.

Non-golfers will go on a half day game drive in the Kruger Park.

Leopard Creek, one of three South African courses ranked in the World Top 100, symbolises the beauty and grandeur of African bushveld golf while at the same time evoking an exclusiveness comparable to Augusta National.

The course actually borders the Kruger National Park, separated by nothing less than the curving crocodile river.

When you imagine a golf course in this habitat it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that the grounds are just as scrubby and arid as its lowveld surroundings, but nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, Johann Rupert and his team have spared no cost in creating one of the lushest and indeed finest playing surfaces in the country.

Innovative landscaping techniques ensure that the course is naturally protected from wild animals, while lakes and small streams have been diverted through the development to create scenic vistas and interesting golf strategies.

Another Gary Player masterpiece, that is home to the annual Alfred Dunhill Championship, a co-sanctioned DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour event. The club is founded on the values of friendship, a common love of the game of golf, and a shared reverence for nature.

Every hole has received detailed attention to ensure that the overall balance in terms of length, position of hazards, and shot values are in harmony.

Full day safari in the Kruger National Park 

GAME DRIVES

Game drives are what the Kruger National Park is all about. The highlight to any day is venturing out on the back of an off-road vehicle, binoculars clutched in one hand whilst the other hangs on for all you’re worth to the constantly rolling vehicle as it makes its way through the bush in hot pursuit of the latest pride of lions, sighted feeding on a kill just over the rise.

Day 16 – Sunday 30th March – Kruger National Park

Spend a relaxing morning at the lodge after breakfast. Check out and bid the team at Buhala farewell.

You’ll be transferred in comfort to Nelspuit Airport, where you’ll board your short connection flight to O.R Tambo International, Johannesburg, where you may want to do some last minute duty-free gift shopping before boarding your outbound flight back home.

Tour ends (boo hoo !).

All prices are subject to availability. Cost of flights, if applicable, is subject to change. Bookings will only be confirmed once the deposit has been received. This document, together with our standard booking terms and conditions, constitute the sole record of the agreement between the parties. The deposit may be paid upon acceptance of this itinerary and our standard booking terms and conditions.

The balance payment is to be paid as outlined in the invoice section below.
Cancellation Policy applicable to this package:

Cancelling before 10/12/2024 a cancellation fee of 33% of the package total will be charged

Cancelling on or after 10/12/2024 a cancellation fee of 100% of the package total will be charged

In the event of clients not being able to travel due to bona fide medical reasons, we will be able to change dates (at an extra charge). A valid medical certificate will have to be provided in this event.

▪ Price is inclusive of VAT, tourism levies and other taxes (e.g. airport tax if applicable)
▪ Only electronic bank transfer payment accepted – no credit cards
▪ Travel insurance is not included

Passport Requirements:-

1. Passports must be valid for at least 30 days after the intended date of departure.
2. Passports should also have at least two blank visa pages for entry and departure stamps.
Visitors will be denied entry into South Africa if their passports do not contain 2 two blank visa pages.
